Fall Campus Events
The completion team is thrilled to have mentors at thirteen Texas Universities this fall: Huston-Tilotson University, Sam Houston State University, St. Edward’s University, Texas A&M University-College Station, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, Texas A&M University-Kingsville, Texas State University, Texas Tech University, Texas Woman’s University, University of Houston, University of North Texas, University of Texas at Austin, and University of Texas at San Antonio. The collegian mentor program was designed to better serve College Forward students at our most popular college campuses.
In addition to the above universities, completion coaches currently serve over 1,600 collegians at over 90 colleges across the country. Coaches conduct in-person visits with students who attend local schools within driving distance throughout the year. The purpose of these events is to meet with students, help them register for classes, provide transfer assistance, fill out financial aid applications, and host activities intended to build strong relationships between coaches and collegians. This is a new partnership between the University of Texas at Austin and Austin Community College. The two institutions are developing a rigorous curriculum that would allow students to enroll and complete their core curriculum at ACC while still receiving advising and benefits of student life at UT Austin. With a successful completion of the core curriculum at ACC and an overall GPA of 2.5 or higher, students will be able to automatically transfer into UT Austin. Deferred actionThe completion team is always looking for opportunities to develop professionally and better serve collegians. Most recently, coaches Chee Ia, Lauren, and Daylisha attended a workshop at Austin Community College led by a panel of immigration law attorneys on Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). Deferred action allows a greater number previously undocumented immigrants to legally study, work, and drive in the US. The coaches learned that eligible applicants who arrived in the US before the age of 16 can now request consideration for deferred action. If granted, the action is for a period of two years, is subject to renewal, and the grantee may be eligible for employment authorization. To learn more about DACA please visit:
